Grammar: Structural grammar learning method in which students use transformation rules to construct Turkish sentences from Dutch ones, up to the level of compound sentences. The skills acquired in this grammar course will be practised later when students learn to analyse and translate a Turkish essay text into Dutch. The focus will be on systematic sentence analysis and the acquisition of common phrases. On the basis of this text, some attention will be devoted to structuring of the student's vocabulary, distinctions between various language registers, and the recognition and translation of idioms. Speaking and listening: Colloquial Turkish will be taught. Much attention will be devoted to completion exercises, grammar training, and conversation using simple sentences. Reading and translating: This course aims at developing the student's vocabulary and learning how to use it to read and translate Modern Turkish. In class, several chapters from a Modern Turkish novel or collection of stories will be read. Translations of these chapters will be available. Some 25 pages will be dealt with in class, while 50 more are to be read at home for the final exam. In subsequent years, students further develop the acquired knowledge. |
