Course description: Pali is the language used in Buddhist texts. It is one of many so-called Middle-Indic dialects. These are languages that have developed to a stage that is half way between (Vedic) Sanskrit and modern Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi and Gujarati. Only students who have successfully completed the introductory Sanskrit course can register for the Pali course. In the course, we first discuss the grammatical differences between Pali and Sanskrit, after which we will read some Buddhist literary texts.
Total duration: 1 semester.
Frequency: The course will be taught on request, in the first or second semester.
