Course description: The curriculum starts with an elementary introduction to Indonesian, in which the student acquires a basic vocabulary of about 600 words and practises the most important grammatical constructions intensively. In later courses, practise with these constructions continues through the reading of simple texts. The required reading from the Indonesian coursebook and the elementary course will be expanded, and students will test their knowledge of it in written and oral exercises. The coursebook 'Leerboek Indonesisch' by H. Steinhauer will be the guideline for further study of the grammatical structures of Indonesian. In the second semester of the first year, students will read modern Indonesian texts to enlarge their vocabulary and further develop their reading skills. Grammar teaching is continued.
In the second year, the students further develop their command of the Indonesian language, and their knowledge of Indonesian society and culture, by reading texts from various genres (business, literary, prose, poetry). Furthermore, several (historical) variants of Malay will be discussed. In the second semester of this year students can register for a summerschool (partly in Yogyakarta).
In the third year, the students will read 150 pages of Indonesian or Malay literature (under occasional supervision).
